Case: Concerns about the non English speaker health
The assignment takes place in a mental health clinic. The interpreter is familiar with the non-English speaker because he/she has interpreted for this non-English speaker before, and as a member of a common Ethno-Cultural Community (though, they are not friends). As the interview unfolds, the patient has indicated she is feeling down. The psychiatrist is trying to determine whether his client needs to go to hospital, and decides not to admit his client. The interpreter, through his/her contacts in the community, is aware that the non-English speaker has made several attempts to commit suicide.
