M1C5 Checkpoint 4

This is an exercise for you to review positioning techniques for consecutive interpreting through a real-life scenario. Read the text and answer the following questions based on what the interpreter should do during the assignment.  Multiple attempts are allowed, but you will need an overall mark of 70 % before moving one to the next section. Good luck and have fun!

An interpreting is assisting in a school meeting where the parents of student and his older sister meet with the principal to discuss an incident involving their son, who was accused of starting a fight and suspended. The parents are emotional and frustrated because they want to see a video of the incident, but privacy laws prevent the principal from sharing it. The interpreter faces these challenges:

  • The parents are speaking Mandarin, while the principal and their daughter speak English causing confusing, as the daughter is not the interpreter.
  • The interpreter must stay neutral, manage her role, and control the emotional tension in the room.
