An interpreter is asked to provide interpretation for a SWIS (Settlement Worker in School) staff, a Karen-speaking woman with her 16-year-old son, Arun, at a secondary school. They recently moved from Manitoba to Ontario. Arun speaks and understands more English than his mother. The SWIS staff is meeting with the mother and Arun to provide information about the Ontario school system. Arun is an extremely talented artist and has found on the internet that in Ontario, there are schools that focuses on the arts. He wants to attend such a school, but his mother wants to confirm with the SWIS worker if this is true. The SWIS worker is new to the position and has never worked with a trained interpreter before. The interpreter arrives at the session, and before he/she can perform the introduction, the SWIS staff directs the questions for the mother to the interpreter. “Ask her when she moved to Ontario and if she knows anything about the Ontario system”. Arun interrupts and says to the SWIS staff in English that he wants to attend a school where he can study fine arts. He found online that there are schools in Ontario that offer this. The SWIS staff replies, “Yes, you are correct, but there is not one in this area. If you wanted to go, you would need to apply and probably take public transit, as it is not close to where you live.” The mother turns to the interpreter and says, “What are they talking about? Is Arun talking about this special art school? I don’t want him to go there. Please tell the worker that he needs to study subjects that will help him to get a good job.”
